Anglican Heritage — Q&A

What is Anglicanism?

Anglicanism is a Christian tradition that grew from the Church of England after the Protestant Reformation. It’s rooted in Scripture, historic Christian practice, and the Church Fathers, forming the third‑largest Christian communion globally. Anglicans describe their faith as a “middle way” that resonates with people from both Protestant and Catholic backgrounds.

What do Anglicans believe and practice?

At the heart of Anglican belief is the historic Christian faith: we believe in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, His death on the cross, and His bodily resurrection — affirming that Jesus is both fully God and fully human. Anglicans uphold the authority of Scripture and the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds as faithful summaries of biblical truth.

Worship in the Anglican tradition centers on both Word and Sacrament. Services are deeply rooted in Scripture and guided by the rhythms of the Book of Common Prayer. Each Sunday, we gather to hear God’s Word, confess our sins, receive grace through Holy Communion, and participate in prayers, music, and teaching that shape our hearts and lives.

Anglican liturgy isn’t a performance for spectators — it’s a shared act of worship. The congregation actively participates through responses, Scripture readings, and receiving communion, making each service both meaningful and formative.

Explaining Our Beliefs to Children

Q: Who is Jesus?
Jesus is God’s Son — that means He is both God and a real person like us. He came to show us what God is like and how much He loves us.
📖 “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” — John 1:14

Q: How was Jesus born?
He was born in a special way when God’s Holy Spirit came to Mary while she was still a virgin.
📖 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel.” — Matthew 1:23

Q: Why did Jesus come into the world?
Jesus came because the world was broken by sin — the wrong things people do that separate us from God. Even though we try to be good, we all make mistakes. Jesus came to rescue us and bring us back to God.
📖 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” — Romans 3:23
📖 “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 6:23

Q: What did Jesus do for us?
Jesus never sinned, but He chose to die on the cross to take the punishment for our sins. Then, on the third day, He came back to life, showing He has power over sin and death forever.
📖 “Christ died for our sins… He was buried… He was raised on the third day.” — 1 Corinthians 15:3–4
📖 “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” — 2 Corinthians 5:21

Q: How do we worship Him?
We read the Bible, pray, sing, and gather together to remember Jesus and thank Him for what He’s done. When we take communion, we remember His sacrifice and celebrate that He’s alive.
📖 “Do this in remembrance of me.” — Luke 22:19
📖 “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.” — Psalm 150:6

Why is the Book of Common Prayer important?

The Book of Common Prayer is a unique hallmark of Anglican worship. It’s a centuries‑old collection of services that unifies Anglicans around the world and guides our liturgy — the “work of the people.”

What is the Jerusalem Declaration?

The Jerusalem Declaration is a foundational statement of faith created in 2008 at the Global Anglican Future Conference in Jerusalem. It was written by Anglican leaders from around the world to clearly affirm historic Christian beliefs and provide guidance for churches seeking to remain rooted in biblical truth.

At its core, the Jerusalem Declaration emphasizes:

  • The authority of Scripture as the final standard for faith and life
  • The historic creeds and teachings of the global Church
  • Salvation through Jesus Christ alone
  • The call to live out the gospel with both conviction and compassion

For many Anglican churches, including ours, the Declaration serves as a clear and trustworthy summary of what we believe and why. It helps ensure that our teaching, leadership, and mission stay grounded in the unchanging truth of the Bible while engaging a changing world.

How is Faith Church connected to the wider Anglican world?

Faith Church Anglican is part of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) — a growing body of congregations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico committed to biblically faithful worship and discipleship. Members embrace historic Christian teachings, the authority of the Bible, and the Anglican tradition of Word and Sacrament.
